Beer O’Clock: The Shakespeare

I’d visited a few times and always enjoyed their beers. Sadly, a recent visit to “the Shake” confirmed reports that beer quality has been in a major slump for some quite time.

In order to get an overview of the beers, I ordered the tasting tray. The last time I was there I polished off the tray and had lengthy internal debates about which brews were my favourites. No such luck this time. I left most of my tray sitting on the table.

Here are my tasting notes from the latest visit:

Part Time Brewer - The Temperance

Wellington

We're looking for an enthusiastic and passionate brewer to become part of the furniture in this newly established brewpub. You'll be brewing beer, so naturally you'll need a keen interest in the beverage and the ability to get stuck in and make it. Using your interpersonal flare to share your passion with other enthusiasts is key.

Attitude is everything. Ideally, you'll have previous experience in a manufacturing process environment and have a relevant tertiary qualification; however a full and comprehensive training programme will be provided to the successful candidate regardless.

If this sounds like you, apply now!

Foster's suffers massive fall in profit

BREWING and wine major Foster's has posted a massive 88 per cent fall in annual profit, with the company taking a $603 million hit to the value of its global wine business while offering investors little assurance that things will improve this year.

Net profit for the 12 months ended June 30 was $111.7 million after tax -- down from $966.2 million a year earlier.

However, higher production costs could hurt margins in the wine business, while increases in malt, hops and fuel prices would add up to 6 per cent to the cost of production for the beer, cider and spirits division.

Australians Prefer Healthy, Eco-Friendly Liquor

Over the next two years, Australians’ liquor preferences are expected to change dramatically – with a new “healthy for me, the planet, uncomplicated and authentic” drinks trend emerging, a Nielsen survey released Thursday found.

“Consumers are demanding more sparkling and Sauvignon Blanc wines, craft beers, and beverages claiming low carbon emissions,” Michael Walton, Executive Director Liquor Services, Pacific, Nielsen, noted.

Nielsen’s survey also found that while Australian consumers are increasingly skeptical about traditional advertising, many are increasingly won over by word of mouth endorsements.

By 2010, retail sales in the Australian packaged liquor market are expected to increase by NZ$1.65 billion, according to Nielsen.

Mr "Bean Rock" dies

Businessman and fashion designer Richard Holden died after a long illness at home in Auckland yesterday.

Mr Holden was a former managing director of Kirkcaldie and Stains and head of Foster's brewery New Zealand. He headed the upmarket Wellington department store for four years and stepped down in August 2005 following a polo injury.

His passion was fashion, designing clothes for opera singer Dame Malvina Major and winning the Melbourne Cup fashion event six times.

A funeral service will be held in St Matthew-in-the-City church in Auckland on Saturday.

Paris - How not to serve a beer

I now regret popping into Paris on Friday night for a quick beer. Paris is an architecturally gorgeous bar on Lambton Quay in Wellington. It reappeared on the scene after the Dog and Bone, one of three bars claiming to be the city's only English pub, shut its doors. The doors of Paris had themselves been mysteriously shut in recent weeks but on Friday it was open for business.

I ordered a Hoprocker and an apple juice (not for me clearly) and was somewhat stunned to be asked for sixteen dollars. On appeal, this was reduced to $12.50. While the apple juice was proclaimed "excellent" (as it should be at that price), the same could not be said of my poor Hoprocker.

It was stale, oxidised and flat.

After some consideration, I took it back to the bar and politely informed them the beer was off. Their reaction to this simple statement was simply incredible.

First, they claimed it was Mac's Gold. I said I had ordered a Hoprocker. I was unclear how them serving me the wrong beer would possibly help their case. Aha, the manager declared, they don't serve Mac's Gold any more! The point of this ruse again eluded me. They had upgraded to Hoprocker because, she said triumphantly, it was a better beer.

I concurred that Hoprocker is a much better beer overall but that the particular example in my glass most certainly was not. The manager waved her hand and said they had served "plenty of beers" and mine was the first complaint. Given the bar had precisely two people in it and they were drinking wine, this seemed a bold claim.

In the meantime, the beer had been sitting on the bar. I looked at it. She looked at it. I repeated my belief, as someone who writes about beer for a living, that this particular beer was in poor condition. She said nothing. I helpfully suggested "I am offering you the opportunity to do something about it." More silence.

As I left, I saw the beer being carried out the back, presumably for further tests.

That, learned readers, is how not to serve a beer. However, it may explain why the place was deserted on a Friday night.

Beerly Tasting: It's been too long

Always the biggest tasting session of the year, Belgian Beers at Cellar-Vate:
While some of the 45 keen people packed in the Cabinet Room at the Backbencher may have been marking the national day of Belgium, I suspect more were attracted by a top notch beer list from the land known as “the paradise of beer”. The fact that there was only one beer under 8% did not seem to put any one off!

Tonight I ran a tasting at Statistics New Zealand on what turned out to be a (surprisingly) stunning Wellington evening:
It was also lucky that was it was the people in this organisation who were asked to equally share seventeen bottles of “The Hef” between 36 tasters. That would have stumped many less arithmetical organisations.

Finally, beer makes it to writer and photographer Adrienne Rewi's blog!

Monteith’s celebrates 140 years with 1860s brew

Monteith’s has been crafting fine beers for 140 years. And to celebrate the milestone, the iconic West Coast brewer is releasing a special brew in a style that was popular way back in the 1860s.

This strictly limited release brewed exclusively at the Monteith’s Brewery Company in Greymouth, West Coast.

“Monteith’s 140 West Coast Pale Ale is a true New Zealand premium ale,” says brewer Barrie Calder. “It’s brewed with New Zealand-grown Cascade hops giving it a striking citrus-pine hop aroma.

It has an alcohol content of 5.2 per cent. Recommended retail price for a four pack is $ 13.99.

Beerly Writing for Early August

The three articles today were all published in Salient, the Victoria University weekly newspaper.

The first previews the Monteith's Beer and Wild Food Challenge in Wellington:
Most people are basically familiar with the rudimentary concepts of wine matching. At a primal level, we generally know that white wine goes with fish, red wine goes with game. This may even be true – I have no idea. Even those who genuinely have no clue tend to believe they can bluff it and come up with an elaborate explanation of why their warm cask of Chateau le Hutt is, in fact, a perfect match for the reheated remains of last night’s Kebab of Shame.

The next covers my favorite National Day after St Andrews Day, Nationale Feestdag:
More than just a chance to toast the Belgian monarchy, Nationale Feestdag is an excuse to settle down and sample some of the very best beers from the land sometimes called “the paradise of beer.” The 120 Belgian breweries use traditional craft techniques to produce beers of exceptional quality from centuries-old brewing recipes. New Zealanders have developed quite a taste for Belgian beer and we consume more than our fair share.

Finally, a hard-hitting expose of my trip to the West Coast as Monteith's Turns 140:
This week, I’d like to focus on two new beers from the good people at Monteith’s. Now, I have to stress that the fact they flew me to the West Coast to enjoy two days of their most generous hospitality has absolutely not influenced my feelings towards these simply marvelous libations.
