Liquor industry mourns Erceg

Despite the competitive nature of New Zealand's liquor business, brewery chiefs are mourning the death of an industry leader in a helicopter crash.

Regional beer losing flavour

Speight's and premium beers are continuing to make inroads in the regional beer market as drinkers become more "promiscuous", Lion Nathan chief executive Rob Murray says.

"Most drinkers would say they have a mainstream brand (such as Speight's), a local premium such as Steinlager, and then a premium like a Stella or a Heineken. Beer drinkers are becoming more promiscuous. The most obvious success is Speight's – it has taken a lot of Canterbury Draught drinkers away."

DB toasts 20pc profit growth

DB's operating profit in the 12 months to September was S$55.3 million ($47 million), up 20 per cent on the previous year. Revenue was S$414.2 million, up 8 per cent.

Lion Nathan's New Zealand operating profit declined 17.2 per cent to $75.7 million for the 2005 year, the Sydney-based brewer said last week.

DB has 38 per cent of the country's total beer market. Lion Nathan has 51 per cent. Blake said the deep level of discounting instigated by Lion Nathan was unsustainable.

New German beer may satisfy drinkers and smokers

Smoking pub patrons looking for their nicotine fix may soon get it from their next glass of beer, not a cigarette.

A new beer has been launched in Germany which contains nicotine and 6.3 per cent alcohol.

Alcohol Healthwatch in New Zealand said drinking three 250ml cans was the equivalent of smoking three packets of cigarettes.

The fallout from photos of All Blacks enjoying an all-night drinking session continues, with major sponsor Lion Nathan unhappy they were snapped drinking a rival company's beer.

DB Breweries is crowing over the photographs. The brewer's sponsorship manager, Peter Wills, said the All Blacks were the best team in the world: "So why wouldn't they drink the best lager in the world?"
