Beer Haiku: Typing Exercise

Today's beer haiku offering - on this sad day - is from Lammiepies Old Man:

The quick brown fox jumps.
Over pints of Speckled Hen
I’m the lazy dog.

I've just received this tragic news...

To the Beer Writing Community,

It is with deep regret that we must inform you of the passing of Michael Jackson, the Beer Hunter, who died yesterday at his home in London, UK. We learned of his passing from our colleagues - Jay Brooks at Brookston Beer Bulletin and Julie and Daniel Bradford at All About Beer.

Michael's presence in the beer world profoundly impacted us as it did many, many of you. He was revered and honored each and every time he joined us and brewers in Denver and across the U.S.

The Brewers Association, like others, has a web page devoted to Michael's extraordinary life we will update that page as information becomes available. Truly this is a sad day for the beer industry as we have lost a good friend.

Room for rent in Wellington Beer enthusiasts haven

Ever dreamed of living in a pub? I have a room for rent in a beer lovers dream home. I run an English style homebrewery with attached home bar south of Brooklyn Wellington. My ales are served hand pulled in the 'lounge' , there are drinks every Thursday, with the odd tasting session at other times in the week. The house is situated 4 minutes drive from Willis St, a 24 minute walk and yet is surrounded in native bush with neighbours on only one side.

The house has off-street parking, plenty of sun, a sun deck, back lawn and of course a bar. The room is large, sunny, and has a private balcony. Rent is $140 a week, plus some expenses.

Email me at onlooker@paradise.net.nz if you are interested.

Cheers

Friday Reading

From the Wellingtonian with kind permission, a column on beer lists, and beer and food matching:
I once bemused an impeccably dressed waiter in a fine (and expensive) Wellington restaurant by asking to see the beer list when ordering. “We do not have a beer list, sir. Why don’t you tell me what beer you would like and I will see if we have it?”

The latest Salient column details the on-going Bud war:
However, the mailbag was recently bulging with a plethora (“two”) of messages regarding comments made about the American beer Budweiser and the Czech beer Budvar in a law lecture at Victoria. The anonymous writers alerted me to the fact that Reader in Law Geoff McLay (known affectionately around the Law School as “Mr McLay”) had devoted part of a lecture to the global legal battles between Budvar - “the beer of kings” - and Budweiser - “the king of beers”.

Finally, the report and results from last night's tasting at the Treasury:
The first ever commercial beer tasting I ever ran was on the May 22 in 2003. It was at the Treasury and there were eight people there. Last night I returned to the same venue to run another tasting to a crowd twice that size!

Beer Haiku: Your Turn

Every week, I find a new personal favourite beer haiku. This week, something in this poem speaks to my Scottish soul. It is called Your Turn and, as ever, it is by the mighty Captain Hops:

Come drink beer with me,
There is much to talk about.
It’s your turn to pay.

Beer Haiku - A day without beer

Today's Friday Beer Haiku was written by Captain Hops over at Beer Haiku Daily to apologise for his server problems.

A day without beer
is like… well… I’ll have to get
back to you on that.

The Salient Points about Beer

This column on budget beers prompted a letter to the editor suggesting I could not handle the strength of Flame beer:

Sometimes an exasperated student will lean back in their chair, close their state-of-the-art laptop, take out their iPod nano earplugs, put their designer sunglasses on top of their head, take a big swig of V, move their pack of cigarettes, adjust their label t-shirts, put their box-fresh trainers up on the table and say:

“Look Neil, I’m just a poor student. I really can’t afford all these hoity-toity beers you keep recommending. Those are for rich people who take showers and stuff…”

So, I decided to put Tui to the test against nine competing beers which all sell for under $15 a dozen.

Then, appropiately, Belgian Beers:

I suspect that no one in New Zealand celebrates July 21 quite as much as I do. By the time this column is published, I will have personally celebrated Nationale Feestdag 2007 four times. It is unlikely even the August Belgian Consuls have done as much commemorating as I have - which is probably just as well if they want to keep their diplomatic credentials.

Finally, I invented a drinking game:

One of the most popular genres is “drink when”. As the name suggests, when something particular happens, a person has to drink a designated amount. These games can involve very little drinking (“drink every time a politician answers the question directly”) or a lot of drinking (“drink every time a woman sighs when Dan Carter is on screen”).

UK lager has had its day

UK consumers will drink on average 11 litres or 19 pints less of the product by 2012.

The new findings will make difficult reading for the country's brewers, who may face the possibility of having to enter new markets to ensure future profitability in their operations.

"The traditional lager lout, with his beer belly and pint in hand, maybe becoming a rarer breed here in the UK, as the lager market has well and truly lost its head,"

"As people are much more aware of the wide choice available, drinkers now realise that there is more to life than just a pint of lager,"

Beer Haiku: Beer Haiku

Beer Haiku is easily the most popular regular Friday feature here at the Realbeer blog. Today's poem is for those struggling to understand the concept and is again the work of that genius Captain Hops:

Beer Haiku

Some just don’t get it.
Because both haiku and beer
are acquired tastes.

Iconic brewery sale welcome

Neighbours of the Lion Nathan brewery are optimistic about its sale.

Mr Amiri says manufacturing beer doesn't belong in the city centre.

"Sometimes the smell is bad, and there's always lots of trucks going in and out."

Mr Brewer will encourage Lion Nathan and AMP to leave behind a reminder of Newmarket's brewing past, such as keeping the Captain Cook statue on Khyber Pass Rd.
