The Wellington Food Show - A Beer Perspective

In a plan so cunning that Rowan Atkinson is considering suing me, I went to the Wellington Food Show at 3:45pm on Friday. The intention was to avoid the crowds, particularly that sub-set of crowds who think a packed food show is the perfect place to take a double baby buggy.

The plan worked to perfection with minimal waiting at most stalls. The number of stands displaying tea was way down, the number offering spreads was way up. So how did beer fare?

Here is the tally:

There were 36 wine stands offering (conservatively) 5 wines each so at least 180 wines were available. I saw one person who looked like he had tried to sample them all.

There were 4 spirit and liquer stands offering (approximately) 15 different spirits and liquers to the punters.

Finally, there were 2 beer stands offering (exactly) 9 different beers.

The only places flying the flag for beer were Monteiths and New World (which had the three Bavaria beers).

Am I the only one which finds this just a little bit sad?

No you're definitely not the only one. That's a disgrace. We have so many exciting beers brewed in this country and the food show is a perfect place to get them out there!
In addition to this i must say i was slightly disappointed at the variety present at the Auck Beer Fest. I was expecting a larger selection of kiwi brews and many stands under-estimated the number of thirsty palates and ran out of beer well before closing time. To be fair i should mention that there were a few excellent ones i had not heard of which left me wanting to scream, "what are you doing?" at the people aimlessly wandering around with their bottles of Monteith's (which i personally love too) that they can purchase anywhere, and not stepping out of the comfort zone. Sad.

The ChCh Food show only had 1 stand - Monteiths. Hopefully, I'll be in a position to do something about this for next years shows. Stand by....

The Hibiscus Coast "Taste Rodney" event - http://vivaevents.co.nz/taste-rodneyhome.html splendidly offered the fine beer offerings of Mata and Hallertau. Not a macro in sight. Eat your big city hearts out.

"Taste Rodney" doesn't really get me going. I reckon you may want to rebrand!

The Auckland Wine and Food Show is coming up and The West Coast Brewery will be there. We will have our Green Fern certified organic Beer there (class winner for premium lager at this years NZ Int Beer Awards) and also our Good Bastards Beer. See you there.

Plus in Wellington this year they have West Coast Brewery, Wigram Brewing, Fosters, Monteiths, Leandra Imports, The Filter Room and Epic Brewing! Best go check out The Food Show this time to ensure that it meets the approval!

A friend went to Christchurch and said they saw West Coast Brewing and Wigram Brewing there as well as Monteiths.
