Real ale champion dies as last beer is brewed

Mr John Young of the London family brewer Youngs and Co has succumbed to cancer at 85. Under the chairmanship of Mr John Young, Youngs and Co resisted the keg beer trend of the 1960's and came to be regarded as a champion of traditional English cask beer. In addition to his support of real ale John Young will be remembered for his eccentric and theatrical appearances at board meetings which included the use of boxing gloves, loud hailers and bee keepers uniforms.
It is perhaps fitting that his death comes the same week as the last beer leaves the Ram Brewery in Wandsworth. Brewing is to be transferred to Charles Wells in Bedford as the result of a merging of the brewing arms of the two companies.
